    Canada’s premier agency for funding research into genomics – which deals with the analysis and functioning of entire DNA sequences in humans and other organisms – is expected to announce a $30-million program Monday that dovetails with the federal government’s emphasis on science that delivers concrete benefits.

    While Canada’s international-student population has exploded to 265,377 students at all education levels, student traffic between Canada and the U.S. – in both directions – levelled off years ago. The 76 per-cent spike in foreign students since 2002 has been built by successfully appealing to countries like China and India, setting Canada up to benefit over the coming decades from having university graduates in those economic powerhouses who are familiar with and even fond of Canada. Yet there is also growing recognition that Canada neglects its closest educational neighbours at its peril.

    Rookie councillor Kerry Diotte announced he will run for mayor in the October election, using Thursday’s campaign launch to criticize the arena deal, the city’s “massive tax and debt increases” and to pledge to fix potholes. Diotte is the first declared candidate for the office.

  4. Sohi opts out of competition for top job

    Coun. Amarjeet Sohi announced Tuesday he’ll seek another term in Ward 12 rather than trying for the city’s top job. “With the departure of Mayor (Stephen) Mandel and a few of my colleagues considering retirement, and others considering a run for the mayor’s chair, the consistency of strong leadership and experience is at risk,” he said.

    Laid-off welders in Ontario sit idle, while oilsands employers in Alberta are chronically short-handed. High-skill jobs go unfilled, yet university graduates can’t find work. Canada has 1.33 million unemployed workers, yet business hired 338,000 temporary foreign workers last year, citing shortages in such low-skilled jobs as fast-food servers. Why? One reason cited has been called the skills mismatch or skills shortage, phrases that refer to the growing gap between the skills Canadian employers say they need and the ones job seekers can provide.

    On Tuesday, December 11, city council passed the 2013 Operating Budget with a 3.3 per cent property tax increase, the lowest since 2002. The budget of $1.95 billion will allocate 2.33 per cent of the tax increase for civic services and agencies and one per cent to continue to fund the Neighbourhood Renewal Program for reconstruction and maintenance of roads, sidewalks and streetlights in mature neighbourhoods.
